The painter picks up charcoal
to interpret on canvas the image dreamt above
Straight away, the sketch looks whacked
Erase and start all over
The second attempt is worst
The painter presses on
She'll go charcoal to white, white on white
the chalkiest white to the oiliest white imaginable,
tinged with pink and blue beneath
like veins of goddess awed by 20,000 volts...
And, lo, a new idea comes to the fore
Blurring the lines with which she began,
the painter sees depth not present before
She leaps into the work,
and through the night, paints thick
No art is complete, save to extend frontiers.
